Once a season, the Perth Motorplex run a drag racing meeting catering for motorbikes only. Anything with 2 wheels is eligible to race, from scooters to top fuel drag bikes.

The March 20th Nitro Funny Car Fury event saw three Nitro Funny Cars go head to head at the Perth Motorplex, supported by well over 200 local cars and bikes.



Damien Harris (above) debuted a new car at this event, which ran a 5.173 during the meeting, while Mark Sheehan ran the quickest Funny Car pass for the meeting with a 5.143. Meanwhile, Fergie Donaldson (below) ran not only his quickest ever pass, but also the Greene Machine teams quickest ever pass with a 5.301 second lap.

The Perth Motorplex's Retro Drags event caters solely to Nostalgia type vehicles and provides an opportunity for hot rodders and street machiners to race amongst themselves. Many of the cars that compete at these events are very rarely seen at other Motorplex race meetings, so this is a great opportunity to see some of Perth's finest rods and customs in a completely different setting.

The Cranksters Pipeline Picnic is an annual event run by the Cranksters Rod and Kustom Club in Western Australia. The day starts with a cruise up to Mundaring followed by a show and shine in the area surrounding the Mundaring Hotel.

Round 2 of the WA Sporting Car Clubs Night Masters series was held at Wanneroo Raceway on March 13th. For this meeting, all racing was on the long circuit, and the program was extended to include races for Formula Ford and Formula Vee during the day. For the majority of the daylight shots from this meeting, I had made the trek down to Kolb Corner, which is why some of the settings look very different from the shots you may be used to seeing on this site.



The Night Masters always puts on a good show, complete with brakes glowing red hot and exhaust flames lighting up the track. The same lack of lighting that makes photographing the event a challenge that I could never pass up, also makes for some very interesting results.

The biggest drag racing event on the Western Australian calendar is the Westernationals, held at the Perth Motorplex on the March long weekend.



This years event was the biggest yet, with over 350 teams entered for the weekend and after two full days of racing, over 10 ANDRA records had been reset, including John Zappia lowering the Top Doorslammer ET record to 5.815 seconds.

Every year, on the Wednesday leading up to the Westernationals, the Perth Motorplex hosts a test'n'tune event so that the competitors, many of whom have travelled from the other side of the country, can have an opportunity to test on the Motorplex quarter mile. In addition, some drivers will take the opportunity to test a new car or complete their licensing procedures even if they're not entered for the Westernationals.



This year I was unable to make it to the pre-Westernationals Test'n'Tune, so I handed my camera to my long suffering girlfriend Kate and asked her to cover the event for me.

Round 1 of the 2010 Night Masters series, held at Wanneroo Raceway, was run on February 20th.



The Night Masters events run a little later in the day than traditional circuit racing events, with qualifying usually starting around lunch time, and several races run under lights. The program usually finishes up around 10pm.
